<p>Human wants a safe and secured social rim to survive and thrive as a social species. Loneliness and depression are pervasive around the world as mental illnesses to human. The research issue relating to the determinants of loneliness and depression should be addressed particularly in developing nations during the COVID-19 pandemic among the urban elderly. Primary data have been collected through online using Google Forms from 202 sample respondents by adopting the purposive sampling method from Madurai City, in the Tamil Nadu state of India. Both Chi-square test and ordered logit regression models have been employed on the survey data. The results of Chi-square test demonstrated that both the level of education and family income are strongly associated with the level of loneliness. Occupational background, the level of educational attainment and the level of loneliness are strongly associated with the level of depression. Further, it is observed that the education has the capacity to reduce depression and loneliness among the urban elderly. These insights send a strong signal to the policy makers to remind the importance of social interaction and personal counselling while framing the social development policy even in the era of internet of things.</p>
