Decarbonizing Structural Alloys in Consumer Electronics: Case Studies at Apple

Materials used in consumer electronic products can be significant contributors to product carbon footprints, but they also represent significant opportunities for decarbonization. Case studies from work done by Apple to decarbonize structural alloys of aluminum, titanium, and stainless steel illustrate the application of six related decarbonization approaches: use of low carbon primary, use of recycled content, use of renewable energy in manufacturing, mitigation and avoidance of direct emissions, increased material efficiency, and materials development and substitution. The application of these approaches as part of a decarbonization strategy was informed by leading life-cycle assessment methods and deep engagement with the material value chains and helped avoid 6.2 million metric tonnes of CO2e emissions in 2024. These approaches also illustrate areas of needed development in sustainable metallurgy to enable lower-carbon impact materials and consumer electronic products.
