摘要

Purpose of the Review

Our paper will outline a concise and comprehensive review of a practical approach to clinical metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), incorporating considerations for risk factors, screening, diagnosis, and management, tailored for the pediatric demographic, with emphasis on risk factors and obesity medications.

Recent Findings

With the shift in terminology from non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) to MASLD, there is a clear need for pediatric guidelines that provide a practical approach to MASLD (Hampl et al. Pediatrics 151(1):e2022060640 [1]; Rinella et al. Hepatology 78(6):1966-1986 [2]; O'Hara et al. Obes Pillars 27(6):100066 [3]; Abou Jaoudeh et al. J Pediatr Gastroenterol Nutr 80(1):14-24 [4]). The combined MASLD guidelines from the European Association for the Study of Liver, Diabetes, and Obesity (EASL-EASD-EASO), published in July 2024 (EASL et al. J Hepatol 81(3):492-542 [5]), focused solely on the adult population. The most recent American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases AASLD publication in April 2025 offers an extensive evidence-based pediatric-focused practice statement on the evaluation and management of MASLD in children (Xanthakos et al. Hepatology [6]).

Summary

We hereby provide a concise and comprehensive review of a practical approach to clinical pediatric MASLD, with focus on risk factors, screening, management, and monitoring that could serve as a guide to primary care providers, gastroenterologists, hepatologists and other advanced health practitioners.
