<p>A large amount of literature has emerged from India on the caregiver issues for patients with schizophrenia. To review the research emerging from India focusing on caregivers of patients with schizophrenia. Internet searches were carried out on various search engines like PUBMED, MedKnow, EmBase and Google Scholar. Only articles originating from India or containing data from India, published in English, on caregivers of patients suffering from schizophrenia were included. One hundred and ninety-four articles were selected for this review. Maximum number of studies have focused on caregiver burden (n = 86), and this is followed by psychological morbidity (n = 31), coping (n = 29), psychosocial interventions (n = 23), QoL (n = 18), pathways to care (n = 14), social support (n = 14), expressed emotions (n = 11), stigma (n = 10), etiological models (n = 9), and caregiving experience (n = 7). The present review suggests that caregivers of schizophrenia patients experience significantly high objective and subjective caregiver burden. Additionally, they also undergo a lot of other negative consequences such as psychological morbidity/distress, poor quality of life, and expressed emotions. The present literature also suggests the use of both adaptive and maladaptive coping by caregivers to deal with caregiver stress. However, there are a significant number of limitations of the current literature that need to be addressed in future studies. To conclude, the present review suggests that caregivers of schizophrenia patients experience significantly high objective and subjective caregiver burden. Additionally, they also undergo a lot of other negative consequences such as psychological morbidity/distress, poor quality of life, and expressed emotions. The present literature also suggests that the caregivers use a mix of adaptive and maladaptive coping to combat caregiver stress.</p>
