Copper Corrosion in Chloride Environments: Key Inhibitors and Strategies

This study examines the essential role of copper in the marine environment, particularly in the presence of a 3.5 wt% NaCl solution, and explores strategies to combat its corrosion. It evaluates two primary approaches to copper protection: using inhibitors directly in the corrosive environment and incorporating inhibitors into smart coatings. In addition, this review provides a comprehensive assessment of the effectiveness of organic corrosion inhibitors and their derivatives in preventing corrosion, comparing them to commonly used inorganic inhibitors in coating techniques as documented in the available literature. Selecting the most appropriate corrosion inhibitor requires an understanding of the highest level of protection these inhibitors can provide and their suitability for specific corrosive environments. In addition to highlighting the importance of selecting the right inhibitor, this review aims to enhance the reader's understanding of corrosion mitigation techniques for copper and to provide a framework for future research efforts. In doing so, it seeks to guide the development of innovative solutions that will enhance the durability and performance of copper in marine and other NaCl-containing corrosive environments.
