Establishing Derived Rule-Following and Evaluating the Effects of Derivation on Persistence

The present study tested the emission of derived rule-following with an experimental task employing arbitrary stimuli only and evaluated the effects of histories with higher or lower derivation on derived persistent rule-following. Experiment 1 partially replicated (O’Hora et al., Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior 102:66–85, 2014), training and testing BEFORE/AFTER (temporal) and SAME/DIFFERENT (coordination) contextual relations using arbitrary stimuli. Eight of 12 undergraduate students followed the derived rules. In Experiment 2, 40 participants were trained and tested on the same contextual relations of Experiment 1 and then randomly assigned to either a lower or a higher derivation level group (i.e., 3 or 15 presentations of one specific rule). Persistent derived rule-following was then compared between groups across two subsequent phases: rule-following punishment and reinforcement. Persistence was measured by rule-following compliance and contingency insensitivity in the punishment phase, and by rule-following reacquisition in the reinforcement phase. Contrary to previous results in the literature, the manipulated derivation levels did not affect persistence. Procedural differences from previous studies are discussed to explain these results.
