<p>With the establishment of the first chair of astronomy in the sixteenth&#xa0;century, the profession of astronomer was created. In the eighteenth&#xa0;century three astronomers primarily shaped German astronomy: Wilhelm Olbers (1758–1840), physician and astronomer, Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel (1784–1846) and the mathematician and astronomer Carl Friedrich Gauss (1777–1855). They made discoveries of celestial bodies that are still important today; however, where giant telescopes and computers are used today, 250 years ago far less powerful instruments, extensive observations and calculations and enormous stamina in the face of adverse working conditions without any occupational safety were required. The following article looks at the working conditions in astronomy around 1800 using the example of three famous European astronomers.</p>
