Crossing borders, shaping perceptions: the role of communication channels in transmitting intangible cultural heritage in Arab contexts
摘要
This study explores the influences of major communication channels (institutionally-curated channels, algorithmically-mediated social channels, video gaming channels) on the intention to accept intangible cultural heritage (ICH) in Arab settings. Taking the spread of Chinese ICH in Egypt as an example, we gathered data collected from 2251 local respondents, and employed correlation and hierarchical regression analyses to assess the moderating effects of these communication channels. The results indicated that algorithmically-mediated social channels exerted a significant yet negative moderating effect on acceptance intention of ICH via subjective norms. This finding suggests that algorithmically-mediated social channels can serve as a platform to directly challenge and dismantle social stereotypes associated with foreign ICH. Additionally, video gaming channels emerged as a significant channel that influences ICH acceptances intention by forming positive attitudes toward it. The immersive and interactive experiences of video gaming channels can make the dissemination process appealing. Video gaming channels can also be utilized to make ICH accessible to those who would otherwise have no chance to know of ICH in their daily life. This paper contributes to the existing literature on transnational cultural exchanges by highlighting the complex dynamics of communication channels in promoting cultural appreciation and engagement.
