A Collaborative Continuum of Care between Applied Behavior Analysis and Outpatient Psychiatry for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder
摘要
Autistic children are increasingly in need of outpatient psychiatric services to support the management of behavioral and mental health challenges. In conjunction with intensive behavioral intervention or counseling, consistent outpatient psychiatric care can mitigate hospital visits secondary to behavioral crises as well as lead to reduced medication burden. Research indicates there is a national shortage of pediatric psychiatrists, and even fewer specializing in autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Furthermore, behavioral dysregulation within healthcare settings can significantly affect patients’ ability to access outpatient psychiatry. This article describes a collaborative care model between psychiatry, board-certified behavior analysts and registered behavior technicians to facilitate safety, appointment completion, and ongoing care coordination.
