Exploring the Impact of Maternal Empowerment on Children’s Health: Insights from Bangladesh
摘要
In developing countries, health of the children has largely been influenced by maternal empowerment. This study investigates the influencing factors of maternal empowerment and their contribution to child health according to the Demographic and Health Survey Bangladesh 2022 dataset. This representative sample included 8,288 children with their mother’s characteristics data. A polychoric principal component analysis was done to make an index. The study utilized descriptive statistics and 95% confidence intervals to see the empowerment levels across geographical divisions. The negative binomial regression model was used to determine the effect of women’s empowerment on child health outcomes. This study found that the financial and family decision-making autonomy of a mother not only empowers them but also significantly improves their child’s health. However, the study also recommended that mothers should exercise greater concern and verify information from the media before reacting to it. In addition, mothers’ educational attainment and residential status significantly impact their children’s health. The evidence from Bangladesh contributes to the overall discourse on maternal empowerment and children’s health. Some effective policy interventions from the government’s end can be addressing economic barriers, enhancing access to the Internet, and promoting gender-friendly decision-making structures in society for mothers.
