Exploring Prevalence and Concomitant Factors of Stunting Among Under Five Years Indian Children: An Investigation Applying Multilevel Analysis
摘要
The main objectives of this present study is to assess the current prevalence of stunting among children under five years of age and identify its triggering factors in Indian context. An ecological study was conducted by using NFHS-5 data conducted in the year 2019–2021. To test for spatial autocorrelation in childhood stunting, the Moran’s I statistic was computed and hierarchical cluster analysis was performed in order to integrate all variables into a single representative dendrogram. Pearson’s chi-square and Cramer’s V test of association were performed respectively to examine the association and the strength of association between predictor variables and stunting phenomena. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression models were used to identify the risk factors associated with childhood stunting. The frequency of stunting in children under five years old is highest in Meghalaya, followed by Bihar, and lowest in Puducherry, according to empirical data from this study and stunting situation varies significantly throughout Indian states and union territories. Maternal education, rural residents, poverty, poor socioeconomic backgrounds etc. are crucial factors that were significantly associated with childhood stunting. In order to reduce the prevalence of stunting awareness, public health intervention, improvement of nutritional status of children, more concentrate on risk factors is urgent issue.
