<p>An imperfectly discriminating contest is a strategic game where contestants exert effort to win a prize and the highest effort does not necessarily guarantee a victory. Contest success function maps contestants’ efforts into each contestant’s probability of winning in the contest. This paper presents a new axiomatization of a difference-form contest success function based on an alternative formulation of the well-known principle of the independence from irrelevant alternatives. This alternative difference-form independence from irrelevant alternatives postulates that the difference between the probability that contestant <i>i</i> wins the contest and the probability that contestant <i>j</i> wins the contest depends only on the efforts of contestants <i>i</i> and <i>j</i> (independently from the efforts of other “irrelevant” contestants). A difference-form contest success function is the only contest success function satisfying this axiom (under standard assumptions that winning probabilities sum up to one and do not depend on the identities of contestants).</p>
