Analysis of endogenous acetylcholine and its correlation with expression of AChE-like genes in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum)

Recent advancements in plant science have unveiled the widespread occurrence of acetylcholine (ACh) in diverse species including plants. The focus of most research thus far has been on the involvement of ACh in physiological processes, growth, development, and stress responses. However, research on ACh content in plant species is limited. This study investigates the temporal and spatial distribution and quantification of ACh levels in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) using Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry (GC–MS). This study shows notable variations in endogenous ACh levels in various plant parts. The maximum concentration was found at the seedling stage and the green parts of a mature plant. The analysis of 87 AChE-like genes found in tomato genome in our previous investigation showed an interesting but expected correlation, with higher expression detected in organs showing low ACh levels, implying a greater degree of ACh breakdown in these regions. These results provide an important insight about the temporal dynamics of ACh in tomato plant, and its role in growth and development. Understanding the fluctuations in ACh levels and AChE like gene expressions across different organs and developmental stages can facilitate in comprehending its importance in plant growth and development.
