<p>Exercise interventions have been shown to improve executive functioning (EF) in individuals with autism spectrum disorder;&#xa0;however, which exercise characteristics are relevant and which aspects of EF are affected remains unclear. This review describes the&#xa0;exercise intervention characteristics (intensity, frequency, duration, and type) that are most effective for improving different aspects of EF in autistic children and adults, and identifies critical areas for further research.&#xa0;Twenty-three studies sourced from electronic databases were included in the final review. Significant improvements in inhibitory control, cognitive flexibility, working memory, planning, self-control, and emotional/behavioural regulation were observed following exercise. Results to date suggest that multiple-session, strategy-based sport interventions of any intensity are most beneficial for improving EF in this population.</p>
