<p>N170 in face recognition is considered to be an objective characteristic of autism. However, some studies do not report this finding. Therefore, we conducted several meta-analyses including twelve studies to explore N170. We also examined the inverted face effect, lateralization, and moderating factors. First, N170 latency in autism was significantly longer than that in the typical development (TD) especially on the right side. Next, the inverted face effect was significantly weakened in autism. Finally, N170 amplitude with right hemisphere was larger than that with left hemisphere for face stimulus in the TD group and subgroup analyses and meta-regressions indicated age was likely to affect N170, and task type may influence N170 results. In short, N170 can distinguish between autism and TD individuals to some extent, reflect spatial configuration information and show atypical lateralization in autism for face stimulus.</p>
