Evidence Based Approaches for Upper Limb Recovery in Hemiplegic CP: a Systematic Review of Constraint Therapy, Kinesio Taping and Mirror Therapy

Hemiplegic cerebral palsy is a neurological condition in which damage to the brain tissues result in abnormal tone, posture and movement disorders in unilateral side of body, resulting in functional impairments. Recent adjunct therapies like “Kinesio Taping” (KT), “Mirror Therapy” (MT) and “Modified Constraint Induced Movement Therapy” (mCIMT) are applied with traditional physiotherapy to specifically improve paretic arm function. This review understands the effect of these adjunct therapies on hand functions along with traditional physiotherapeutic measures. This review holds the main objective of providing an overview of the effect of different physiotherapeutic interventions on hand functions in children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy.
Recent FindingsFour electronic databases were explored for English-language research published in the past 10 years, including randomised control trials. The study centred around children from 8–18-year-old, with hemiplegic cerebral palsy, interventions including CIMT, MT and KT. The studies included assessed hand functions by giving these interventions. Finally, seven articles with a total of 312 children with hemiplegic CP were included in this systemic review. Two studies concentrated on KT, while two others focused on MT, and three studies examined CIMT. One study compared CIMT and KT, while another compared CIMT and MT.
SummaryAccording to this review, mCIMT, KT and MT improve overall hand functions, but for dexterity and movement related improvements, MT proves to be more beneficial whereas for improving grasp strength, KT prove to be more beneficial.
