Purpose of Review <p>People with intellectual and developmental disabilities have been historically excluded from research. This narrative review describes three barriers to research participation for people with these disabilities and presents researchers with preliminary suggestions to use technology in their research designs to address them. The goal of describing barriers and exploring technology is to have researchers think about new and innovative ways to increase inclusion of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities through participatory research approaches.</p> Recent Findings <p>There is an emerging trend in the research community to utilize various forms of participatory research approaches. However, the literature suggests that people with intellectual and developmental disabilities may still experience several barriers that prevent researchers from engaging this population throughout the research process. These barriers include the digital literacy gap, inaccessible in-person research sessions, and communication challenges.</p> Summary <p>With digital literacy training, people with intellectual and developmental disabilities can learn to use various forms of digital tools with associated features that are accessible through digital devices that may support their inclusion throughout a participatory research process to varying degrees. When researchers consider technological recommendations, they may empower people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to become actively involved in research that directly affects their lives.</p>
