Purpose of the review <p>The purpose of this review is to counter deficit-based narratives of LGBTQ+ people with intellectual disabilities by understanding and celebrating the strengths of this community and the joy they have described in their lives.</p> Recent findings <p>LGBTQ+ adults with intellectual disabilities have described accepting themselves and valuing connections with other LGBTQ+ people. They have been self-reliant, advocating for and educating themselves, and have sometimes found support from their families and service providers. LGBTQ+ adults with intellectual disabilities expressed enthusiasm about helping others in their communities and promoting acceptance and inclusion.</p> Summary <p>LGBTQ+ people with intellectual disabilities bring valuable strengths to their communities and experience joy in their lives despite ongoing discrimination. Future research on the lives of LGBTQ+ people with intellectual disabilities should be conducted in collaboration with researchers with lived experience of these identities. Research that celebrates strengths and joy can resist stigma and more authentically represent the lives of LGBTQ+ adults with intellectual disabilities.</p>
