Objectives <p>Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is a multifactorial neuropsychiatric disorder with genetic, neurological, and environmental determinants. This review systematically examines the involvement of enzymatic pathways and natural products in the management of MDD.</p> Methods <p>A thorough literature search was performed using databases like PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science, with an emphasis on studies published over the past two decades. Keywords were “Depression,” “MAO-A inhibitors,” “Neurotransmitters,” “Saffron,” and “St. John's Wort.” Information was synthesized to emphasize the function of enzymes like monoamine oxidase (MAO), tryptophan hydroxylase (TPH), and cyclooxygenase (COX) in the pathophysiology of depression.</p> Results <p>Plant compounds like curcumin, hyperforin, and safranal were also explored for their potential as antidepressants. While natural substances show good therapeutic activity, issues persist with their standardization, bioavailability, and clinical establishment.</p> Conclusion <p>Future studies need to aim at combining enzyme-targeted therapies with plant-based formulations to maximize treatment effectiveness and reduce side effects in MDD patients.</p>

Objectives

Methods
