Purpose of review

Stimulant Use Disorders (StUD), namely cocaine use disorder (CUD) and methamphetamine use disorder (MUD), are significant worldwide public health concerns. Here, we provide a concise review of current treatment options for CUD and MUD.

Recent Findings

Despite advancements in the understanding of StUDs, there are still no FDA approved pharmacotherapies. Psychosocial treatments – namely contingency management (CM) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) – remain the first-line interventions. Nonetheless, recent work indicates several promising pharmacological approaches (e.g., prescription stimulants, ketamine, combination pharmacotherapies), alongside innovations in methodology (e.g., allowing use reductions as a trial outcome) and implementation (e.g., use of digital therapeutics for psychosocial treatments).

Summary

While challenges remain towards identifying effective treatments for StUDs, current efforts suggest promise for identifying efficacious pharmacotherapies and novel methods for delivering existing psychosocial interventions. Future directions include exploring combination treatments and increasing care accessibility and engagement.
