Acclimatization responses of plants co-occurring in vegetation formations in a tropical forest

Restinga is a highly unstable Atlantic Forest ecosystem susceptible to future climate changes. The functional traits of Restinga plants are poorly understood but can enhance our knowledge of adaptive processes. In this study, the functional acclimatization of structural and physiological characteristics of four species that co-occur in restinga vegetation formations in the Atlantic Forest was investigated. It was discovered that the species adjusted their leaf functional characteristics to the different restinga formations. The physiological traits (e.g., photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, maximum quantum yield of photosystem II [PSII]) exhibited more than plasticity in all the species and were particularly relevant to this acclimation. In addition, we provide evidence of an acclimatization group with Schinus terebinthifolia and Pera glabrata since their traits did not differ among the vegetation formations, and they invested in a combination of plastic and integrated foliar changes. On the other hand, the functional traits of Eugenia uniflora and Scutia arenicola widely varied among the Restinga formations, and these species invested more in integration than plasticity. In general, the results suggest that plasticity and phenotypic integration contribute to the functional acclimation of the species in contrasting environments and can potentially help respond to future climate changes.
