<p>The outranking method ORESTE is a multicriteria decision-making (MCDM) tool originally introduced in 1978. In recent years, it has garnered renewed interest among researchers, particularly through its integration with linguistic variables. However, the method exhibits notable shortcomings that can yield unexpected results. These issues have not been thoroughly analyzed in the literature. This paper highlights the impact of these limitations on the initial Besson ranking and the distance-based criteria, using intuitive test cases for illustration. Moreover, it proposes general alternatives for the distance-based criteria as well as for the indifference and conflict analysis stages of the ORESTE method. The inclusion of a simple benchmark case and the evaluation of alternative approaches offer valuable contributions to the broader field of MCDM. In conclusion, the revised methodology is applied to a case study, demonstrating enhanced transparency and improved comprehensiveness of the adapted ORESTE framework.</p>
