Purpose of the Review <p>This review explores the available evidence related to the interhospital movement of intensive care patients, highlighting the opportunity for anesthesiologist involvement.</p> Recent Findings <p>Considerations in the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases of care parallel the transport process. In the preoperative and pre-transport environment, the emphasis is on a thorough assessment of the patient’s condition, risk mitigation before advancing, and appropriateness of the planned intervention. After preparation, the anesthesiologist can apply principles of supportive critical care and high-risk anesthetic care to optimize safety throughout patient transport. Following transport, the anesthesiologist must prepare the receiving team for the immediate consequences of movement and optimize the patient for long-term outcomes. Anesthesiologists readily demonstrate this potential through involvement domestically and internationally in patient transport.</p> Summary <p>Anesthesiologists’ leadership in patient safety through the perioperative environment shapes a natural role in delivering high-quality care while transporting critically ill patients.</p>
