Point-of-Care Ultrasound for Shoulder and Hip Dislocation in the Emergency Department: A Literature Review
摘要
Shoulder and hip dislocations are time-sensitive emergency department (ED) presentations requiring rapid diagnosis, reduction, and reassessment for associated injury. Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) offers a bedside, radiation-free imaging modality that can streamline this pathway.
Recent FindingsSystematic reviews and ED studies demonstrate very high diagnostic accuracy of POCUS for shoulder dislocation and for confirming successful reduction, with potential reductions in time-to-diagnosis and length of stay. Ultrasound guidance expands analgesic options, including intra-articular lidocaine and brachial plexus blocks that may reduce procedural sedation use in selected patients. Evidence for traumatic hip dislocation is smaller but supports POCUS as a diagnostic adjunct and a rapid post-reduction confirmation tool.
SummaryWhen integrated with appropriate radiography and standardized protocols, POCUS can accelerate care, improve workflow, and broaden anesthesia strategies while maintaining patient safety.
