This review synthesizes literature from 2016 to 2024 on the safety, efficacy, and implementation of ambulatory bariatric surgery, focusing on sleeve gastrectomy and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass.</p> Recent Findings <p>Same-day discharge sleeve gastrectomy (SDSG) shows complication and readmission rates comparable to inpatient care when guided by strict protocols and patient selection. Some large-scale database studies report slight increases in emergency visits and complications, particularly during periods of rapid adoption. Similar trends are seen with same-day Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (SD-RYGB). Limited data suggest feasibility of same-day discharge for more complex procedures like SADI-S.</p> Summary <p>Same-day discharge bariatric surgery is a viable and efficient model for select patients. Success depends on enhanced recovery protocols, postoperative monitoring, and evidence-based patient selection. Further research is needed to refine best practices and broaden applicability.</p>
