Comparison of Concrete-Rigid Facing and Gabion Basket-Flexible Facing of Geogrid-Reinforced Soil Retaining Walls Subject To Various Loading Conditions

The geogrid-reinforced soil retaining walls have been widely used due to their various benefits, and the facing rigidity exerts marked effects on the performance of geogrid-reinforced soil retaining walls. To study the influence of facing rigidity, the performance of a geogrid-reinforced soil retaining wall with gabion basket-flexible facing and concrete-rigid facing has been compared through the limit analysis method with finite element discretization. To make a comprehensive comparison, the influences of facing rigidity under surcharge loading conditions and seismic loading conditions have been investigated thoroughly. Regarding the seismic loading condition, the pseudo-static analysis is utilized. The Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion is adopted to represent the behavior of gabion basket-flexible facing and soil, and perfectly rigid material is adopted to describe the behavior of concrete-rigid facing. The numerical result indicates that the rigidity of the wall-facing wields considerable influence on the behavior of the geogrid-reinforced soil retaining wall. Each type of wall-facing has its own advantages when a geogrid-reinforced soil retaining wall is under various loading conditions. The tensile force distribution of each geogrid layer under different loading conditions has also been investigated, which can be adopted as the design reference for the future application of geogrid-reinforced soil retaining walls.
