Laboratory Experimental Study of Soil Improvement in Saveh City Using Micro-Silica and Geogrid Via Dynamic Simple Shear Testing
摘要
Chemical improvement of problematic soils has been a conventional method of soil remediation for a long time. Geotechnical researchers nowadays prefer using micro-scale materials to enhance soil quality cause of these materials’ high reactivity. Microscale materials maintain a high specific surface area, which makes them highly effective even in small quantities. This characteristic sets them apart from other materials. In light of the growing population of Saveh City caused by industrial development and the increment of high-rise buildings, coupled with the region’s seismic activity, there is a need to prioritize the dynamic assessment of the area’s soil. In this research, to improve the mentioned soil, micro-silica, which is an abundant waste material with high adhesion and hydrophilic properties, and geogrid with small mesh, which has high tensile strength, have been used, and the effectiveness of these two materials has been compared in different conditions. The results of the experiments showed that the shear modulus increased by 35% with two layers of geogrid in the sample and almost doubled with the addition of 5% micro-silica compared to the local soil. However, the damping ratio decreased by 15% and 21%, respectively. Overall, samples containing micro-silica exhibited superior strength compared to geogrid-reinforced samples.
