摘要

The foundation of Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple at Ayodhya posed several complex challenges. Based on a comprehensive evaluation of various alternative foundation schemes, a rigid monolithic raft foundation system was selected. Corresponding author (as a member of expert committee) played a decisive role in resolving foundation design issues for the Ram Temple; he personally visited site during COVID, studied geotechnical reports and proposed an independent and scientifically sound foundation design, which is adopted by temple committee. The paper presents details of the deep excavation as suggested by Sitharam, carried out at Shri Ram temple site at Ayodhya, along with ground improvement (by adopting roller compacted concrete in the excavated pit followed by laying of shallow foundation above the roller compacted concrete mass). The excavation reached a depth of 12–14 m (RL 93 to 91 m), followed by placement of engineered fill using roller compacted concrete (RCC) in 56 successive layers, designed to provide a high-modulus subgrade reaction. A 1.5-m-thick M35 grade self-compacting plain cement concrete raft was laid service as a base for stonework (base of raft at RL 106.19 m). Above this, a 6.15-m-thick raft comprising interlocked granite blocks was constructed over the concrete raft to ensure uniform load distribution and structural continuity. Rigorous quality control protocols, including in situ compaction verification and settlement monitoring, were implemented. Post-construction measurements confirmed a maximum total settlement of only 4.7 mm, well within the permissible limit of 12 mm, validating the foundation system’s performance. Details of foundation system adopted along with construction related challenges have been presented in the paper.
