Geotechnical Forensics of Khandeswarwadi Dam: Investigating Partial Subsidence Mechanisms Through Field Studies and Laboratory Model Simulations

The Khandeswarwadi dam experienced partial sinking in its downstream area. The present study involves a thorough field investigation, followed by a series of laboratory tests and a small-scale model study to understand the cause of the sinking. The field investigations involved standard penetration tests (SPTs) and rotary drilling. The progressive damage observed on the dam’s downstream side was determined to have occurred over six days. Laboratory tests on the samples collected from the site indicated the presence of coarse-grained material in the hearting zone and clayey soil in the casing zone. The cross-section of the dam was subjected to a considerable amount of subsidence. The study also involves a small-scale model study to ascertain the cause of the stress and subsidence. The subsidence patterns observed in the model study are comparable to the in situ pattern in the field. Based on the findings and experimental data, the study outlines the causes of failure and appropriate remedial measures for the dam’s stabilization.
