Deterministic Seismic Hazard Assessment of the Chhotanagpur Plateau, India

Chhotanagpur plateau lies in India’s eastern part, mostly occupying the states of Orissa, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, and Jharkhand. It has suffered several earthquakes previously, and Global Seismic Hazard Assessment Program categorized it into low-to-high seismicity region; therefore, it is indispensable to perform seismic hazard assessment for this region. For this purpose, an earthquake database of 100 years epicenters within a radius of 700 km from Ranchi is used to compute the peak ground accelerations at the bedrock level using the deterministic seismic hazard analysis. Since the region-specific ground-motion prediction equations (GMPEs) are unavailable for the Chhotanagpur plateau, four GMPEs developed for other areas of similar geological and tectonic setups are consulted in the framework of the logic tree approach. The study revealed that the PGAs in the Chhotanagpur region vary from 0.10 to 0.31 g. The northern part (Gaya, Nawada, Patna, Koderma, Chatra, and Hazaribagh) and southern part (Ranchi, Singhbhum, and Kharsawan) of the region have PGAs in the range of 0.16–0.21 g with some patches of areas having PGAs ranging from 0.21 to 0.26 g in the northwestern (Rohtas, Chandauli, and Bhabua), northeastern (Bhagalpur, Banka, Purnia, and Katihar), southwestern (Surguja, Sundargarh, and Sambalpur), and southeastern (Bankura, Deoghar, Jamtara, and Birbhum) parts of the Chhotanagpur plateau. The cities like Dumka, Bankura, Sidhi, Surguja, and some portions of Dhanbad, Sonbhadra, and Sundargarh have large PGAs in the range of 0.26–0.31 g and are found to be most prone to earthquakes. The seismic hazard map for the Chhotanagpur plateau will aid the future earthquake-resistant design of structures.
