New Regional Correlation Between Shear Wave Velocity (Vs) and Penetration Resistance (SPT-N) for the Eastern Indo-Gangetic Plain Region
摘要
The shear wave velocity (Vs) at a site dictates the distinctive characteristics of an earthquake motion. It is arguably the most vital parameter to describe the soil layer’s stiffness. Although in situ experiments are the most effective method for measuring Vs, testing at each site is not viable economically. Hence, it would be advantageous if there was a consistent relationship between Vs and standard penetration test blow-counts (SPT-N). The development of a new reliable correlation between Vs, as evaluated by multichannel analysis of surface wave (MASW) tests, and SPT-N in the eastern Indo-Gangetic Plain region is shown in this study. In the region, 38 distinct locations have undergone these tests. The relationships between shear velocity and SPT-N value have been determined separately for all types of soil, clay, and sand employing Orthogonal regression. Using the newly established correlation, the observed and predicted Vs values have been leveraged to derive the residuals. The penetration resistance N values were found comparatively greater in the sites with high fine contents. The obtained correlations reliably anticipate the Vs values with the SPT-N values of 40 and 50 with engineering expertise. After comparing proposed correlations with regression equations put forth by other researchers, it turned out that the developed correlations function alongside the predictors and are beneficial for the region's seismic microzonation.
