Impact of Vetiver Roots on Hydrological Behaviuor of Different Soil Types

Vetiver grass roots have significant role in altering the hydrological properties of soil. These alterations can in turn affect the behaviour of soil during rainfall events. In this study, a detailed approach has been made to quantify the effect of vetiver on hydrological modification of different soil types. The hydrological modification was studied using soil column tests which measures infiltration rate and permeability. The effect of vetiver on the Soil Water Characteristic Curve (SWCC) was also determined. An interesting trend was found which implies that performance of vetiver is influenced by the soil gradation. Results of silty soils MH and ML showed a significant decrease in infiltration and permeability with plant maturity, whereas in SM and SW soils an increasing trend was observed for infiltration. Increased root density intensified transpiration, leading to higher soil suction. Elevated suction levels were linked to improved adsorption and specific surface effects, while lower suction levels relied more on capillary surface tension and soil structure. The performance of vetiver varied with soil types implying the influence of vetiver in stabilizing soil is greatly dependent upon the soil gradation. These findings provide valuable insights into Vetiver grass’s role in slope stabilization, paving the way for more effective and sustainable land management practices.
