Selection of Pesticides for Cotton Crop Using an Integrated Multi-criteria Decision Making Approach

Cotton, a major cash crop in India, contributes significantly to the global textile industry. However, the robust cotton production in India faces a persistent threat from various pests, leading to substantial yield losses. In an effort to mitigate these losses, an essential aspect is the judicious selection of the most effective pesticide tailored to each pest, which can be treated as a multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) problem, consisting of numerous conflicting criteria and a set of equally compatible solutions. This paper proposes an integrated MCDM approach, combining best worst method (BWM) (for criteria weight measurement) and mixed aggregation by comprehensive normalization technique (MACONT) (for ranking of the alternatives) to identify the best pesticides for five common cotton pests, i.e. Jassid, Aphids, Whitefly, Bollworm and Thrips. Based on eight evaluation criteria and adopted approach, Acetamiprid 20% SP appears as the most effective pesticide for Jassid and Aphids pests, while Bifenthrin 10% EC, Chlorantraniliprole 18.5% SC and Imidacloprid 17.8% SL are most suitable for Whitefly, Bollworm and Thrips, respectively. Sensitivity analyses against varying values of both the balance and preference parameters are also conducted to validate robustness of the proposed approach. This paper would thereby enable a systematic evaluation of pesticides, offering a comprehensive solution to the intricate problem of their selection and enhancing efficiency of pest management strategies in the context of Indian cotton plantation. It would also lead to a substantial reduction in cotton yield losses, contributing to sustainability of cotton farming in India.
