Thermal Breakdown in Solids (Ceramic-Polyethylene-PVC-Silicon Rubber-Glass) due to Electrical Conduction and Insulation Loss Coefficient

In power systems, thermal breakdown occurs when the heat generated by the electric field is faster than cooling in the insulation. An ideal insulator never exists. Heat is produced due to the movement of charges in the insulation. But if there is a strong electric field, more heat is produced with increasing losses. As a result of the electric current passing through the conductor and heating the conductor, this heat is transferred to the insulation. In other words, when the insulation is placed in an electric field, heat is produced due to energy loss. On the one hand, this energy loss is caused by the small electrical conductivity of the insulation, and on the other hand, it is due to the polarization state in it. In addition, if there is a gas bubble inside the solid insulation, inside that bubble, a partial discharge takes place, and this partial discharge also causes heat generation. In this case, it will suffer thermal breakdown in terms of insulation.
