An IoT Enabled Advanced Metering Infrastructure for Real-Time Power Theft Monitoring and Detection in Distribution Grid
摘要
Power theft in the distribution grid poses a significant challenge for distribution utilities, leading to substantial revenue losses and operational inefficiencies. To address these issues, the implementation of Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) has become crucial. AMI enables distribution utilities to manage resources and business processes more effectively and efficiently. The integration of Internet of Things (IoT) technology with AMI further enhances the flexibility, efficiency, reliability, and overall service quality in power distribution systems. This study presents a remote monitoring solution leveraging IoT-enabled AMI for real-time detection of power theft arising from illegal connections or meter tampering. The proposed system has been validated using the Proteus Design Suite across multiple case studies, with additional support provided by a physical prototype model. In scenarios where a power imbalance is detected, the system enables utilities to accurately identify the location of the theft whether between distribution poles or at specific consumer premises. This information is promptly relayed to the smart grid control center, enabling utilities to take timely and appropriate corrective actions.
