The Role of IoT in Irrigation System to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals: Monitoring Strategies, Controlling, Future Prospective, and Challenges

Increasing populations, warmer climates, and higher demands for sustenance have all led to the increasing necessity of irrigation schemes. Sustainable farming is becoming easier because of technological advancements that are being used by many nations. Improving irrigation systems contributes to achieving United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 6 (UN SDG 6) and Target 6.4, especially by concentrating on lowering water waste. The benefits of intelligent irrigation, which employs the IoT and perhaps other sensor nodes, and how it helps achieve SDGs are explored. When it comes to cutting-edge innovations, the IoT consistently ranks high. An IoT is a ubiquitous technology that enables “smart/intelligent” irrigation, cars, cities, and other systems to perceive their surroundings and respond accordingly. Traditional farmers depend on their skill and expertise since there is no reliable way to collect data from the fields. Increasing yields requires modernising the agricultural system. Manual procedures are ineffective and time-consuming. An IoT can help determine what to do by assessing the ever-changing topsoil, climate, and crop conditions. While smart farming and IoT-based irrigation are still in their infancy, they are rapidly developing worldwide. This study examines decades of research and focuses on irrigation powered by the IoT. This study aims to abstract and compile IoT-based irrigation tasks. To ascertain its potential scope, research will be done on IoT-based cloud computing, the Indian government’s approach to IoT, soil and weather monitoring, water management, wireless communication protocols, sensors, and their related technologies. Finally, the issues with and benefits of IoT-based irrigation systems are emphasised. Researchers and farmers may better grasp irrigation techniques, challenges, and management strategies with the aid of this paper.
