Cable-Stayed Buttress Dam: A Dam for the Future

Dams significantly contribute to the efficient use of water resources. As these fresh water resources are limited, many more dams need to be built for proper use of this resource. This study demonstrates a novel technology to solve the problem of building a concrete dam at a low cost while maintaining its inherent safety. The present proposal called the cable stayed buttress dam, (CSBD), evolved from the concept of a flat slab buttress dam and a cable-stayed bridge, (CSB), which is based on the principle that it is more efficient in carrying a force in tension than in compression or bending. The dam thus bears a resemblance to a cable stayed bridge laid on its side, with the front wall constituting the water face of the dam, and the CFRP stay cables transmitting the water pressure in tension via the inclined pylons and buttress to the rock foundations. The key elements of the design and construction are also discussed. A numerical example of a 40 m high, 60 m long CSBD is provided and it is found to satisfy all necessary stability criteria. A cost comparison with an existing concrete buttress dam with a similar profile indicates a significant cost advantage. Overall, this is a promising innovation and could potentially be a viable alternative when conditions favor the use of a buttress dam.
