Insect Pest Complex of Food Legumes in Kashmir

Legume crops are vital for food and nutritional security, particularly in temperate regions like Kashmir. However, their productivity is greatly constrained by insect pests, causing severe qualitative and quantitative losses. Taking serious note of the problem, the present study was conducted to study the insect pest complex of food legumes in Kashmir, India, and accordingly, surveys were carried out throughout the study area from March 2021 to February 2023. Fortnightly surveys were conducted at 30 selected sites representing the diverse geographical landscape of the study area in terms of GPS coordinates and agroclimatic zones. A total of 21 insect pest species were recorded, belonging to six orders: Hemiptera (8 species), Coleoptera (6), Lepidoptera (4), and one species each from Diptera, Orthoptera, and Thysanoptera. Based on the nature of damage, pests were categorized as sap suckers (9 species), defoliators (7), pod borers (3), stem borers (1), and leaf miners (1). The major and widely distributed pests included Acyrthosiphon pisum, Aphis fabae, Helicoverpa armigera, and Phytomyza horticola. Mean infestation of dominant species ranged between 20 and 50%, with H. armigera causing the highest pod damage (up to 50.48% in Phaseolus vulgaris). Hemiptera emerged as the most dominant order, reflecting the high prevalence of sap-feeding pests in the region’s temperate environment. The diversity, distribution, infestation rate, and allied aspects of the pests reported from the legume crop fields will provide a baseline for developing effective management strategies against the insect pests of legume crops in Kashmir.
