Ecological Characterization and Habitat Assessment of Major Rivers of Arunachal Pradesh; Eastern Himalayan Foothill

The rivers of Arunachal Pradesh, eastern Himalayan foothills are unique since they offer a variety of microhabitats, feeding ground, breeding spots, and migratory routes for aquatic fauna. In the present investigation, an effort has been made to study the variability of the riverine ecosystem in four major rivers of Changlang district, AP viz., Namphuk (S1), Namphai (S2), Namchik (S3), and Rima (S4) during 2020 to 2023. Habscore was recorded maximum in S4 (9.28 ± 1.39) and minimum in S3 (7.20 ± 2.03) and RHQI ranged from 0.74–0.95 in all the study sites. Current investigation measured water temperature (14.21–21.00 °C), pH (6.95–8.12), dissolved oxygen (9.62–12.80 mg/L), conductivity (29.95–60.55 µS/cm), turbidity (0.30–1.50 NTU), TDS (19.10–50.25 mg/L), and total alkalinity (29.20–46.62 mg/L) in the studied sites. Results of correlation matrix and PCA of the studied parameters were strongly correlated at p < 0.01 and p < 0.05. The present findings could provide significant data on species diversity, population study, special adaptation of hill stream fishes, captive breeding, restoration of natural spawning grounds, and monitoring the changes in the riverine ecosystem due to natural and anthropogenic activity.
