Exploring the Impact of Heavy Metal Toxicity on Wheat Germination: Knowledge Dissemination Through Scientific Cartoons

The heavy industrialization and rapid technological advancements in the current decade have raised severe concerns over heavy metal toxicity. These issues have been considered serious hazards to the entire ecosystem, which eventually includes plants, humans, and animals. The problem is further perpetuated due to limited awareness of the rural population toward the consequences of heavy metal stress in agriculture. The current work, therefore, aims to link the literature on heavy metal stress in plants and the visual culture, thereby emphasizing the use of visuals and cartoons to comprehend and further communicate the challenges associated with land pollution among rural populations. Pb and Cd-induced stress in Triticum aestivum L. (Wheat, variety UAS-347) plants were established in terms of germination rate and Timson’s Index through dose–response relationship (6.25 ppm to 100 ppm). Relative Root/Shoot Index and Chlorophyll content were also measured. The results reveal that a higher dose of heavy metals (50 ppm) could deteriorate the germination rate (by ~ 40% in Pb and 50% in Cd), Timson’s Index (~ 16.89 in Pb and 17.33 in Cd) and other associated functions, thereby, drastically affecting plant growth. In order to disseminate the knowledge further to the masses, the results were represented in terms of a heat map with color prodigy, which makes communication easier. The effects of the stress were further elucidated using the pictorial representation in the form of scientific cartoons (Scientoons). The work, thus, bridges the gap between the scientific community and the stakeholders of the rural/agriculture community.
