Celastrus paniculatus Willd. (Celastraceae) is an endangered medicinal plant commercially used in countless Ayurvedic and herbal formulations. The species is native to Indian subcontinent, Indo–China, and South China. It is traditionally used for the treatment of various ailments such as gout, rheumatism, leprosy, asthma, depression, urinary disorders, skin problems, neurological disorders, etc., in Indian system of medicine since prehistoric time. Over exploitation and extensive collection from wild areas have ended this species into the endangered list. So far, more than 80 phytoconstituents were reported from this plant including wifornine F, malkanguniol, celapanigin, zeylasterone, pristimerin and lupeol. Crude extracts, fractions and essential oils isolated from the plant revealed many in vivo and in vitro pharmacological activities including anti-malarial, anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, anti-fertility, anti-oxidant, hypolipidemic, wound healing, anti-arthritic activities, etc. The data collected and compiled in the present review revealed that Celastrus paniculatus is a therapeutically promising medicinal plant having multiple biological activities and commercial potential.
