Modulation of Transaminases in Different Tissues of AFB1 Induced Early and Advanced Stage of Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a most common type of primary liver cancer and one of major causative factor for the development of HCC is dietary exposure of aflatoxins. The purpose of this study was to assess glutamic oxaloacetate transaminase and glutamic pyruvate transaminase activity in various tissues of AFB1 induced different stages of HCC. Rats of normal control groups (N15 and N45) provided standard diet and water ad libitum. The alcohol control and HCC control groups provided with 5% alcohol in drinking water for 9 weeks. HCC was developed in 15 days and 45 days groups respectively by two doses of aflatoxin B1 (1 mg/kg bw, i.p.) on consecutive days. HCC-induced rats were sacrificed on the 15th and 45th days of AFB1 treatment, considered early and advanced HCC control groups, respectively. The results of the current study, for the first time, demonstrated a significant increase in GOT and GPT activity in the liver, heart, testis, kidney, brain and muscle of early and advanced stages of HCC rats, indicating insult in the treated animals. This adaptive increase in the activity of these enzymes in the tissues most likely facilitates gluconeogenesis by facilitating the transamination of glucogenic amino acids to satisfy energy requirements.
