<p>Characterization of tea germplasm accessions (TGA) is a primary and most important tool for tea improvement and tea breeding programs. Floral morphological characters are one of the most reliable descriptors for characterizing TGA. Until now, minimal information is available regarding the phenotypical characterization of tea germplasm in many regions in India, including Darjeeling District, which is the home of the only GI (geographical indication) trademark tea. The objective of the present study was to analyze the floral diversity among different tea germplasm accessions and categorize them into major taxa according to taxonomic information. For this, 25 TGA was characterized by using 30 floral morphological traits. Results indicated the presence of considerable variation among different TGA based on floral traits. Pistil traits were highly variable compared to other floral traits in different TGA. In the Assam variety, accessions had mainly long pistil compared to other varieties. Short pistil trait was observed in China variety accessions, whereas an intermediate pistil type was observed in the Cambod variety. Based on different floral characteristics among TGAs, they were categorized into distinct groups by the principal component analysis and cluster analysis, and the relationship among different floral traits of TGA was determined. In the tea breeding program, knowing the exact variation and relation among different accessions based on morphological characters is necessary. Therefore, this maiden study will help tea breeders to identify different TGA based on floral morphology.</p>
