Evaluation of Insecticidal Activity of Selected Plant Extracts on the Cotton Aphid, Aphis Gossypii and Tomato Leaf-Miner, Tuta Absoluta

The objective of this study was to evaluate lethal, repellent, and antifeedant effects of acetone, ethanol, aqueous, and hexane extracts of several plant species on two pests: cotton aphid and tomato leaf-miner. The highest insecticidal activity against the second nymphal instar of Aphis gossypii was found in acetone extract of pepper/chilli (Capsicum annum L.) (LC50 = 4.86 µg/mg), followed by acetone extract of Zataria multiflora, ethanol and aqueous extracts of hina (Lawsonia inermis), aqueous extract of marshmallow (Althaea officinalis L.), and hexane extracts of artichoke (Cynara scolymus L.) and Z. multiflora with the LC50 values of 5.67, 5.98, 6.04, 6.06, 6.13, and 6.39 µg/mg, respectively. The results of repellent experiment showed that acetone extracts of C. annum and Z. multiflora and ethanol extract of L. inermis caused 67.5%, 57.5%, and 40% repellence at the highest tested concentration (6.00 µg/mg), respectively. The highest insecticidal activity against the second larval instar of T. absoluta was obtained in acetone extract of Z. multiflora (LC50 = 3.44 µg/mg), followed by acetone and ethanol extracts of C. annum, ethanol extract of L. inermis, hexane extracts of Z. multiflora and A. officinalis, and acetone extract of L. inermis with the LC50 values of 3.46, 3.91, 4.20, 0.37, 4.45, and 4.94 µg/mg, respectively. According to the findings of this study, the tested plant extracts have potential in the management of these two pests; however, further investigation on the effects of these extracts and their formulations is needed.
