Massive Swarming Event of the Blue Button Jellyfish Porpita porpita in the Andaman Islands, Bay of Bengal
摘要
In marine ecosystems, the colonial hydroid Porpita porpita (Linnaeus, 1758) provides key ecosystem services, including serving as a food source, offering shelter, and contributing to nutrient cycling. In recent years, the swarming of Porpita has been reported globally. However, no previous incidence has been observed in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The present study reports the recent widespread stranding of Porpita porpita on the beach of Little Andaman, India, on March 05, 2023. Further, we examined seawater environmental parameters and satellite data to uncover the possible causes. This investigation offers insight into the P. porpita distribution on a global, national, and regional scale. Monitoring and development of predictive models based on oceanographic parameters could help in understanding ecosystem-level repercussions due to the rising number of mass swarming events.
