Biological Notes on Elasmus brevicornis Gahan (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae), an Early Larval Parasitoid of Banana Skipper, Erionota torus Evans (Lepidoptera: Hesperiidae)
摘要
Localized flare-ups of the banana skipper, Erionota torus Evans (Lepidoptera: Hesperiidae), in some pockets of Tiruchirappalli District, Tamil Nadu, during February–March 2023, were contained by the early larval parasitoid, Elasmus brevicornis Gahan (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea: Eulophidae), with parasitism levels as high as 90%. Brief illustrated notes on the life stages and biology of E. brevicornis on E. torus are provided for the first time. In the laboratory, E. brevicornis preferred the II-III instar larvae of E. torus for oviposition and the eggs hatched within a day. The combined duration of the three larval instars was 2–3 days and the pupal period lasted 4–5 days. The life cycle of E. brevicornis from egg to adult emergence took 7–8 days and the sex ratio was highly female-biased (5:1–6:1). A pupal hyperparasitoid, Pediobius sp. (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae), was recorded on E. brevicornis.
