<p>In this work, a high capacity 4 ×&#xa0;10&#xa0;Gbps underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) system using mode division multiplexing (MDM) is designed and investigated under different water types. Four Laguerre–Gaussian modes are used to enhance the system capacity and spectral efficiency. Results shows that faithful 11&#xa0;m UWOC range with − 86&#xa0;dB signal power at 0.5&#xa0;dB transmission loss are obtained successfully. Also, the system can sustain beam divergence of 2&#xa0;mrad and additional loss of 2&#xa0;dB with − 2.56&#xa0;dB signal power. Compared to exiting works, the proposed design shows best performance.</p>
