Co-occurrence of Two Bet-Hedging Strategies: Pseudo-Vivipary and Amphicarpy in Schoenoplectiella Praelongata (Poir.) Lye (Cyperaceae)

The present study provides the first report of the occurrence of pseudo-vivipary and the co-occurrence of amphicarpy and pseudo-vivipary in the different ramets of the same genet in Schoenoplectiella praelongata (syn. Scirpus praelongatus), an annual species of Cyperaceae. The species grows mainly in the seasonally dry tropical biomes of Asia to Northern Australia. The organographic study reveals the morphological nature of the pseudo-viviparous propagules and these are modified spikelets than florets. The ability of basal nutlets to carry an amphicarpous adaptive strategy to enhance the survival of the progeny and also higher expansion rate of new individuals during adverse environmental conditions forward to the next generation is also discussed.
