Electrochemical Corrosion Study on Heat-Treated API X70 Steel Used for Pressure Vessel Applications

This study investigates the effect of heat treatment on the corrosion performance of API X70 pipeline steel in two corrosive environments: natural seawater and sodium thiosulphate solution. Steel samples were austenitized at 800 °C (HT-1), 850 °C (HT-2), and 900 °C (HT-3), followed by quenching and tempering at 450 °C. Electrochemical testing using Linear Sweep Voltammetry (LSV) was performed in a three-electrode cell to evaluate corrosion potential, current density, and corrosion rate via Tafel extrapolation. The 800 °C heat treatment (HT-1) resulted in the lowest corrosion rate, particularly in seawater, indicating improved resistance due to microstructural refinement.
