Investigating the Effect of S4-C504 Filler on Mechanical and Microstructural Behavior of Similar API X70 MIG Welded Joint
摘要
This article explores the effect of S4-C504 Carbon filler on the welding of X70 pipelining steel. The hardness, impact toughness and microstructure of the X70 weld has been examined. The impact toughness values were compared with fractography findings obtained using scanning electron microscope in order to correlate the fracture behavior with material properties. The microstructure of the weld (base metal, HAZ and fusion zone) has been investigated using optical and scanning electron microscope. The X70 base metal consisted of a mixture of ferrite (acicular ferrite, polygonal ferrite and Windmanstatten ferrite) and pearlite which is randomly distributed throughout the matrix, while the fusion zone comprised of grain boundary ferrite and polygonal ferrite. The average value of hardness was found to be 241 VHN in fusion region, 219 VHN in HAZ region and 226 VHN in base metal region. The impact testing was carried out using as per ASTM E23 standard and reported to be 186 J and 161 J for welded zone and HAZ regions.
